What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to chronic inflammatory disorders of the digestive tract. The two most common types—Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—affect nearly  two million Americans. IBD can develop at any age, though cases in infants and very young children are uncommon, and most diagnoses occur at age ten or older. The precise cause remains unclear; however, dysregulation of the immune system plays a central role in the intestinal inflammation. Both conditions often cluster in families, and certain environmental exposures increase risk. Incidence varies by race and ethnicity, with the highest rates reported among Caucasians, particularly people of Jewish ancestry; Ashkenazi Jews show higher rates than Sephardic Jews. Persistent differences across eras and regions point to a meaningful genetic contribution.

Digestive and Liver Center of Florida: Lifelong Comprehensive Care for IBD Patients

Digestive and Liver Center of Florida is uniquely equipped to deliver seamless, lifelong care for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Because IBD often requires continuous management, patients benefit from receiving care within an institution that integrates advanced treatment, diagnostics, and multidisciplinary expertise.

Our coordinated approach brings together gastroenterologists, surgeons, mental health professionals, dietitians, and other specialists to provide individualized, patient-centered care. This model enhances care coordination, improves outcomes, and optimizes the overall patient experience.

Our team addresses all aspects of IBD management—including medical and surgical treatment, mental health support, dietary and nutritional counseling, IBD-specific preventive health maintenance, and access to subspecialty evaluations when needed. This comprehensive structure allows patients to consult multiple specialists in a single day and, in many cases, receive same-day appointments.

While there is no singular cure for IBD, Digestive and Liver Center of Florida offers a full spectrum of therapeutic options designed to achieve remission, prevent flare-ups, and help patients maintain the best quality of life possible.
