Get your Colorectal Cancer Screening at age 45

Recent guidelines from the American Cancer Society, show that colorectal cancer screening should now start at the age of 45. Why is this you ask? It has been linked to preventing deaths and making sure to catch the disease at an earlier stage, which can help with the treatment. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer that has cost many lives in the United States. For that reason, it’s important to keep an eye out for any symptoms and signs you may be experiencing. While many older individuals are usually the ones diagnosed with this cancer, you should definitely start with the colorectal cancer screening once you turn 45 instead of 50 years old. Here at the Digestive Liver Center of Florida in Orlando (DLCFL), you can definitely count on our GI experts to do these screening tests and address concerns you may have.

Who should do colorectal cancer screening?

These recommendations for colorectal cancer screening only apply to some. For instance, if you don’t have any family history with colon cancer or any other digestive disease, are in good health and don’t have any personal history with abnormalities in the digestive system, then it is recommended that you get your first screening at age 45.

However, high risk individuals like those with family history and/or personal history with colorectal cancer or other digestive diseases, should start with colorectal cancer screening even earlier. Which is something that should be discussed with your physician of course. It has also been found that there is a higher rate of colorectal cancer in African Americans. This is due to a higher rate of obesity, poverty, and various healthcare disparities.

What are the different tests?

There are two groups of tests that you can receive for colorectal cancer screening available to you in Orlando. Our physicians will always recommend the best screening based on the patient’s needs. The first group is called stool-based tests. These types of tests are easier to perform since they can be done from home, but require you to do them more often. If the test comes back with abnormalities, then they will order you to do a colonoscopy to see the problem more clearly. The other group of tests are the visual exams, which check the colon and rectum for any abnormalities. Again, a colonoscopy. You can get this procedure done with one of our Orlando GI experts right here at DLCFL. These types of tests can be done every 5 to 10 years.

Making your colorectal screening appointment

If you are 45 years old already, and consider yourself as an average risk patient, you should definitely talk to your doctor about colorectal cancer screening to do it as soon as possible. It is likely that your insurance will cover for these types of tests at that age, and that is where we come in; the Digestive and Liver Center here in Orlando is always accepting new patients to help them and make sure that they’re completely healthy. You should definitely go ahead and schedule your appointment. Your health always comes first! Call us at (407)384-7388.
