Celiac Disease

celiacdisease

What Is Celiac Disease?

It’s an immune disease where if the person who has it consumes gluten, it’ll damage their small intestine. With time this can cause serious medical complications. This challenge with having celiac disease is that gluten is found in a lot of wheat, barley and rye products, so you have to be more cautious of what you’re eating.

Symptoms

Common digestive symptoms of celiac disease are diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal pain, constipation, weight loss, bloating and gas. Other symptoms unrelated to the digestive system are osteoporosis or osteomalacia, itchy blistering skin rash, joint pain, mouth ulcers, headaches and fatigue, and more. Keep in mind that symptoms vary in children and with each individual.

Risk Factors

People with the following are at higher risk of getting celiac disease:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Down syndrome or Turner syndrome
  • Addison’s disease
  • Autoimmune thyroid disease
  • Microscopic colitis
  • If you have a family member with celiac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis

Causes

Celiac disease will usually occur in individuals that have one of the two groups of normal gene variants, DQ2 and DQ8. It’s unlikely that people with this variant will develop the disease. About 30 percent of people have this variant, but only 3 percent actually develop celiac disease. While consuming gluten will trigger the symptoms, it doesn’t mean that a person with the variant will automatically get a reaction.
