What is Abdominal Pain?

Aching from the inside of the abdomen or the outer muscle wall is abdominal pain. The severity of it can range from a mild and temporary pain to needing emergency care for it. While most cases of abdominal pain aren’t a serious issue, there are some cases that can be a sign of an illness that needs the proper medical care right away.


Types of Abdominal Pain

Separated into the duration of the discomfort, you have three categories:

  • Acute pain: Lasts for a few hours or days and may possibly come with other symptoms
  • Chronic pain: Lasts from weeks to months—maybe even more, but this symptom may come and go
  • Progressive pain: Gets worse with time and will often be accompanied by other symptoms


Causes

There are endless possibilities as to why you may be experiencing abdominal pain. Some of the most common reasons are constipation, indigestion, stomach virus, and for females—menstrual cramps. Other more serious possibilities include:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Appendicitis
  • Diverticulosis
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Pancreatitis
  • Cholecystitis
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Cancer of the stomach, pancreas, liver, bile duct, gallbladder, or immune cells


When Should You See Your Doctor?

If your pain has come to the point where it’s intolerable, doesn’t go away, or keeps coming back, you need to make an appointment with one of our Orlando GI physicians right away.  Other reasons to contact us is if your abdominal pain is accompanied by symptoms such as:

  • Fevers
  • No bowel movement
  • Vomiting
  • Can’t keep food down for more than two days
  • Signs you’re getting dehydrated
  • Pain when urinating, or having to urinate often
  • Jaundice
  • Having trouble breathing


Abdominal Pain Diagnosis

When it comes to diagnosis the pain, the possibilities are endless, which is why your doctor will have to do a thorough physical exam, ask you several questions regarding the history behind it (When did it start? Were you injured recently? Etc.) After the exam is over, the doctor will proceed in conducting tests on you. These tests include:

  • Stool or urine tests
  • Blood tests
  • Barium swallows or enemas
  • Endoscopy
  • X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy
