Radiology

1. NPO (nothing to eat or drink) after midnight, on the night before your procedure. (Must be a minimum of 8 hours prior to the procedure).
Exception: U/S Paracentesis, FNA Thyroid, and Neck Biopsy you will need to fast 2 hours prior and arrive 30 min prior.

2. You will need a driver who can bring you to the hospital 1 ½ hours before the scheduled time of your Interventional procedure. If you are scheduled only for a Chemo Embolization you will need to arrive 2 Hours before scheduled procedure. During this time you will get registered, have lab work completed, then have your IV started and history taken by the nurses in Radiology Recovery Unit.

3. If you are scheduled for a FNA Thyroid / Neck Biopsy Please arrive 30 min prior to your scheduled procedure appointment to register. You may be here up to 1 hour for Biopsy.

4. The procedure is estimated to take at least 1 to 3 hours if having an Angio Procedure. If you are having a Biopsy it could take 15- 30 minutes.You will stay at the hospital approximately up to 4 hours after the procedure. Bone Marrow Biopsy will stay about 1 hr after procedure on bed rest.

5. Someone must drive you home from the hospital on the day of your procedure. Please arrange for a responsible adult to be present for the post-procedure instructions, to take you home and to remain with you after discharge. For your safety, the procedure may be cancelled if these arrangements are not made.

6. Your driver/care-giver does not have to stay during the procedure. A phone number can be exchanged with the staff in Radiology Recovery Unit, so that he or she can be called when the procedure has been completed. Your driver/caregiver may also call to check the approximate time you will be discharged.

7. If you are diabetic:
Do not take morning insulin the day of the procedure.
Do not take oral hypoglycemic medication (diabetes pill) the day of the procedure.
Do not take GLUCOPHAGE the day of the procedure. If the procedure includes IV contrast, then do not take Glucophage for 48 hours after the procedure. If you feel that you need an alternative diabetes medication during these days, contact your physician who normally orders your diabetes medication.

8. If you are currently taking blood-thinners or anti-coagulants:
DO NOT take ANY anti-coagulants or blood-thinner medications, including Coumadin, Lovenox, Heparin, Plavix, Aggronox, Arixtra, or Aspirin. Stop taking all blood thinners or anti-coagulants 5 days PRIOR to your procedure. Please consult your Doctor to ensure this is appropriate for you.

9. Take oral medications as scheduled (except hypoglycemic, Glucophage, blood-thinner and anti-coagulant medications, as stated in instructions #6 and #7) with A SIP OF WATER, THE MORNING OF THE PROCEDURE.

10. Bring ALL of your medications and the phone number of your pharmacy with you to the hospital on the day of your procedure. (It may be necessary for the Radiologist to call in a prescription for you.)

11. If you are allergic to IV contrast medium or have had an allergic reaction to it in the past, please notify the Interventional Radiology procedure staff as soon as possible, by calling 407-303-1542 .

*** An Interventional Radiology nurse will call you the day before your procedure to explain your preps and procedure; and to confirm that these instructions are followed. They will gladly answer any remaining questions OR concerns you may have. ***
